Bloom (Blawan remix) – Radiohead

So Radiohead have been noted to be quite into their electronic music, as you can see from their frequently updated office charts. As someone who doesn’t froth at the mouth at the mention of the name Thom, this did not really interest me. However, what I failed to notice, is that every week they would be putting out remix singles. If you haven’t figured it out yet, an awesome taste in artists and an unlimited choice of them means a multitude of great artists are now putting out remixes of Radiohead’s latest album. Four Tet, Ramadaman, Caribou, Shed and Objekt are just a few of the massive producers given remix duties. Enjoy Blawan‘s growth on his Bloom remix, he takes his epic sound even further, with great a great intro and those trademark killer drums.

Free Fridays #7

For one of the ATP festivals in 2009, Caribou outdid himself at playing his own music live. Normally, he tours with a band around the world, famed for their performances and the sheer amount of venues that they play. This time, Caribou created his own 15 piece ensemble, including Four Tet twisting knobs and four of the ensemble playing drums. If you’re looking for the peaceful, calm days of Manitoba, look elsewhere. This live performance is a pretty amazing example of organised chaos.

Pinnacles – Four Tet

Four Tet has given away his latest track, which he just released with Caribou, and it’s superb. Continuing his style, this one-off single, is an epic house jam. Everything you have come to expect from Four Tet is present; the awesome percussion, the groovy undercurrent and lots of weirdness thrown on top.

Running Music Mix #24

The highly praised Caribou gives us a huge and eclectic set. Minimal, instrumental hip hop, afrobeat and disco are just a few of the genres presented to us in this well crafted mix. Caribou has been DJing for over 15 years, so to say he has enough practise to craft a perfect mix is underselling it. Download here.

Best Remixes of 2010

All the way back in 2008, my feeble mind started the idea for the “Best Remixes” list. These were the days when I didn’t realise what electronic music was and, like the majority of the population, thought that a remix was putting a 4 to the floor beat to a non-electronic song. Oh, how times have changed! Then, last year, I decided to put everything in random “genre” categories (I use genre in the broadest sense possible).

So now, this part of the triad of lists has morphed into electronic dance music and not exclusively remixes. Originally, there was about 80 songs, in two playlists. The criteria for these tracks was that they had to be electronic dance music, from 2010 and not already have featured on my top tracks of 2010. We have to give others a chance. These tracks then came down to 40. Fortunately, I learned about the Bleep competition. To enter, one must create a mix with only songs from 2010, which you consider to be the best of that year. This was what I was doing, so I decided to narrow everything down to 22 tracks into one playlist. This means some stuff that I would have loved to be included just didn’t make the cut. However, if I get enough listens on mixcloud, I have the chance of getting some awesome prizes.

Now, what you get is half a techno and dubstep mix and half a house and disco mix; a heavy side and a light side. Everybody wins! Download mix here. You can stream or download each track too.

Top 25 Tracks of 2010

This list has become rather redundant. I write about my favourite songs in pretty much every post and many of these songs have already been featured here. The numbers have little meaning, I did put some time into putting the list in an order, but I’m pretty sure most of the songs could be put anywhere. What this list has become is the chance for me to respark interests long forgotten and to highlight songs I didn’t get the chance to talk about this year. Click on the links to give each a listen. Enjoy!

Sun Remixes

One of their best songs from the latest Caribou album, it has had a slew of remixes which are fantastic. It’s obviously due to the hook of the song (SUN SUN SUN SUN SUN SUN SUN SUN SUN) being easy to put over any beat you want to. Here are my favourites:

The intro to Dead Clown Society‘s version of the song is so intense. The entire song is a bit stuttery and chopped up, but not enough to ruin the original power of the track. I wish this song managed to keep up the intensity of that intro because if it did, it would be my favourite.

A really nice edit, Midland adds to the original by slightly tweaking the arrangement and adding real drums, which makes sure the whole song is dance floor friendly for even those with two left feet.

Let’s call this the proper house one, with Bowski creating a real rhythmic groove underlying the original. I really love the percussion on his take. Download here.
