Running Music Mix #49

Paddy from Honest John teams up with Joy Orbison for a killer, two hour house mix. I’ve have already listened to it all the way though, twice.

Running Music Mix #12

Sickness and forgetfulness lead to no Running Music Mix last week. This week, I ask for forgiveness with the announcement of a little change to this feature. Every 12 of these (or every 3 months for those who aren’t math geeks), I will be posting a custom-made mix with my random musical highlights. The choices will be faster paced for running, but can be listened to at any time, just like with all the Running Music Mixes featured here. So without further ado…

Running Music Mix #10

An up-and-coming producer from Oxford puts us through an intense, highly skilled, garage mix. Graphics is only 18, but has a hard worth ethic. You can tell because of the tons of originals, remixes and sets that are already on his soundcloud, many of which you can download for free. My favourite part of this set was the creative mixing of the Joy Orbison track. Found through Truants. Download here.

Running Music Mix #6

Last week was a really happy mix, this time we are going to the dark side, with an amazing mix of garage from the xx’s front man. It starts with an awesome old school Streets track (one which I had never heard before) and then turns to the xx remix I posted recently. A great beginning which then goes on to feature other artists such as Joy Orbison, James Blake, Zomby and Burial. Download here.

Everything Everything

Everything Everything have PR magic. The first time I heard their name was through the BBC sound of 2010 (among names such as Joy Orbison, Gold Panda and Two Door Cinema Club). Then, Real Horrorshow Tunes posted about their ridiculously catchy single, Schoolin’. And then I get two emails from their agency, a week apart, featuring remixes. Okay, the last part isn’t that magical, but what does make it special, is that the remixes are good. It’s rare you’ll find one decent remix by a buzz band, but Everything Everything have two. If all of this is news to you, I give you a little bit of everything to try out (both the remixes are downloadable). Their debut is being released in August.

The aforementioned Schoolin’ is catchy, staccato fun, the way I like it. It’s got whistling, strings, vocal harmonies and jumpy guitars and drums weaving in and out of everything. It’s a formula for success.

The better of the two remixes, Clock Opera wins for originality, I love the chopped up intro. The remix standard pumping is kept interesting with other splices from the song.

Next GRUM’s take on the same song. He is not normally someone I’m a fan of, but this time his synthpop made a real impression on me.

The Big Mixbag

BRKLN CLLNJoy Orbison

Joy Orbison is the most hyped electronic artist right now. Hyph Mngo placed 23rd in tracks of 2009 by Resident Advisor and 1st by Fact magazine. He has received a best new music award from NME, Pitchfork and the BBC. The taste makers seem to indicate he is good. So if you’re bored of Hyph Mngo, try its far cooler cousin, BRKLN CLLN. This one has been produced to perfection, and will sound so good blasting out of your speakers.

Paper (Hot Sax Version)Explode into Colors

Basic, but addicting stuff from my favourite smart people music blog.

Got Your Money - Wu Tang vs. The Beatles

The beautiful original is warped into an elegant hip-hop beat. Added on top is the timeless vocals of the Wu-Tang Clan. Though I haven’t listened to the whole of this mashup album, I can safely say the production values are top-notch, with everything cleverly put together with a copious amount of love.

Flat BeatMr. Oizo

I’ve been researching Mr. Oizo for his DJ set at the Southside festival this year. So far I have learned;

  • He is really fun, but terrible, DJ
  • He used to create films as well as music
  • His video featuring Flat Eric makes this song far more epic than it deserves to be

The Fellowship - Cha-Cha

Fun indie rock with influences from The Virgins, The Strokes, The Police and Phoenix sent to my inbox a couple of months ago. It’s good.

Best Remixes of 2009

Electronic music has become a much larger part of my musical listening now, and so this post has evolved into a “let’s put as much random electronic stuff in here as possible” list. We now have the main dance-y list and a bunch of little snippets of random genres within electronica. And this year I’ve put the dance mix into a large mp3 file for your pleasure. Do you like that? Should I make one mp3 mixes more often? Should I actually mix it myself or just let my program do it? Any advice on this post would be much appreciated. Thanks for the picture Tanakawho.

Relaxed/Chilled/Spacey Non-Dance Electronica

This section has seen some of my favourite discoveries, with the likes of Four Tet, The Field and other such types really blowing my mind with their fantastic sound manipulation. Great for studying, sitting back and zoning out.

Mash-ups

Mash-ups are generally fun, but never amazing. My favourite this year was definately Party and Bullshit because it managed to make me dance to Miley Cirus with a smile on my face. This year DJ Earworm’s billboard project was really good, probably because there was a much faster beat to his previous work.

The Rest Which Don’t Get A Proper Heading And Because They Wouldn’t Go Well In The Dance Mix
The Actual Dance Stuff

This mix is a good hour and a half and makes up my favourite dance tracks of the year, starting with some slow funky stuff (The Twelves being my favourite new DJs this year), and then moving to some electro, which gets pretty hard with Boys Noize, another discovery from this year.
